The College of Montana, founded in 1878, was a private liberal-arts school -- the first institution of higher learning in Montana. For much of its existence, it was affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. Despite having a distinguished faculty, the school suffered from limited enrollment and closed in 1916. Later, as the local public-school system grew to accommodate students from around the county, Trask Hall housed the 6th, 7th and 8th grade overflow from the original O.D. Speer Grade School. A nearby campus building was used for the gym. (Vintage postcard photo)
