That is Sugarloaf Mountain on the east side of Deer Lodge in the background. Patricia Warren here. It looks to me like this photo was taken up on the bench on the east side of town, looking towards the Emery Mine. There were several homestead properties up there that became bank foreclosures, and were later acquired by my dad and incorporated into the Warren-era ranch. That area of the ranch was our summer range...what we called "cow camp." About Sugarloaf Mountain. That range along the east side of the valley is called the Boulder Mountains, because it's characterized by huge boulders and massive rounded outcrops of rock (like the Sugarloaf) all along its higher elevations. Everything up there was ground down and smoothed by a glacier in ancient times. Along the bench at the foot of those mountains, is where the Grant-Kohrs Ranch had its summer range during the Warren era. Those pastures are watered by creeks that rise on the flanks of Sugarloaf.
